✨Book Review✨

💙 Thank you to @aaknopf for the #gifted copy!

-Abandoning a Cat by Haruki Murakami -

🐈 It’s remarkable how something so short can leave you with so much to think about. In fewer than 70 pages, Murakami offers a heartfelt reflection on his childhood and his complicated relationship with his father, including memories of his father’s life before he was born and his time in the military. There’s so much feeling in his words, and the brevity of the essay somehow makes his reflections all the more powerful.

🐈 Much of the essay is a somber reflection on his own existence and the relationship he shared with his father. I found it moving how he looks back on a life he knew only in pieces, trying to better understand the man his father was before becoming a parent. There’s something deeply human about looking back and realizing how much of our own story began long before we were born.

🐈 Despite its title, this isn’t really a book centered around cats. Rather, a fond childhood memory becomes a way of looking back at a life with greater understanding. I love the thought that our most meaningful memories aren’t always made during life’s grand occasions. Sometimes, it’s the simplest moments, the ones we don’t even realize are significant at the time, that become the most precious as the years go by.

🐈 The beautiful illustrations throughout lend a welcome lightness to an otherwise somber essay. I’ve always appreciated how Murakami can take something so ordinary and make me consider it in an entirely different way. Such a small book, yet so much to reflect upon.

Available tomorrow!! 🎉
