Swiping through this carousel, you are looking at one of the largest web-weaving spiders on the planet. The wildest part? You won’t find a male in this lineup! An absolute masterpiece of evolutionary biology: the female Giant Wood Spider (Nephila pilipes), also known as the Golden Orb Weaver, photographed in Central India. 👑🌿 In her world, she completely rules the kingdom. ✨ The Size: She is an absolute giant, boasting a body length of up to 50 mm and a jaw-dropping leg span reaching 20 cm! ✨ The Male: A literal dwarf. He’s only about 4–6 mm big, roughly 1/10th of her size! He basically lives on the edge of her massive 2-metre web, praying not to become her post-mating snack. ✨ The Venom: With her terrifyingly beautiful size and strong golden webs (capable of catching large prey), she looks incredibly intimidating. While she is venomous to her insect prey, she poses no threat to us. Her venom is weak against humans and she is highly docile. ❓ Why the massive size gap? Evolution favors massive females because they need the body mass to produce thousands of eggs. On the other hand, tiny, lightweight males evolved to be small so they can easily navigate thin strands of silk without breaking the web or triggering her predatory instincts. If you’ve ever walked through the forests of Central India and spotted a massive, shimmering yellowish-golden web, this is the magnificent architect behind it. 🕸️💛 Shot on @nikonindiaofficial Z9 w/ 400mm & Z8 w/ Sii- 70-200mm #sadaawildlifephotography #sadaawildstories #spidersofindia #giantwoodspider #
