A new study led by researchers at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health has found that older adults who nap frequently may face a significantly higher risk of developing dementia. By tracking nearly 1,000 Medicare beneficiaries aged 65 and older over a 10-year period, the study revealed that individuals who napped on most days or every day had a 48% higher risk of a dementia diagnosis compared to those who rarely or never napped. This increased risk remained present even after accounting for factors like age, existing health conditions, and overall nighttime sleep duration. The researchers also noted that unintentional napping—such as nodding off unexpectedly—was tied to a 39% higher risk, while short naps lasting 30 minutes or less were associated with a 40% higher risk. Crucially, the authors emphasize that these findings do not prove a direct cause-and-effect relationship, meaning that taking a nap does not inherently cause brain damage or cognitive decline. Instead, frequent or worsening daytime sleepiness is considered an early warning sign or biomarker. The underlying neurodegenerative changes associated with early-stage dementia can damage the brain regions responsible for regulating wakefulness, leading to increased fatigue and daytime dozing long before memory loss or other clinical symptoms officially manifest.
