FG Spends Over ₦1 Trillion On Cancer Control In One Year — Budget Minister Bagudu

The Minister of Budget and Economic Planning, Abubakar Atiku Bagudu, has disclosed that the Federal Government spent over ₦1 trillion on cancer control in the last one year.

Bagudu made this known during a 5.4-kilometre cancer awareness walk in Abuja themed, “One Walk, One Fight – Walk Away Cancer.”

He said ₦350 billion was invested in establishing cancer centres nationwide, while over ₦300 billion was committed to cancer detection equipment, alongside other health sector allocations. He added that additional funds had been made available to state and local governments for cancer prevention, early detection and treatment, stressing the need for accountability.

“I want to commend the Union for International Cancer Control (UICC), under the leadership of its president, Dr Zainab Shinkafi Bagudu, for its relentless and longstanding cancer awareness and sensitisation campaign.

“Cancer control remains one of the priority areas of President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda in the health sector,” he said.

The Minister of State for the FCT, Dr Maria Mahmoud, urged Nigerians, particularly women and girls, to undergo regular screening.

“We really appreciate and commend this sensitisation initiative for Nigerians. With this kind of massive turnout, the high prevalence of cervical cancer will go down,” she said.

The Minister of State for Education, Professor Suwaiba Ahmed, said nobody should fight cancer alone.

“To all cancer patients and survivors, we see your fight and honour your courage. We shall continue to stand with you in solidarity,” she said.

Meanwhile, the President of the Cancer Society of Nigeria, Professor Abidemi Omonisi, called for support for cancer patients and survivors, noting that treatment remains expensive.

UICC President, Dr Zainab Shinkafi Bagudu, said the organisation had been fighting cancer alongside stakeholders for over 12 years and called for increased financial allocation to cancer control.

Cancer survivor Farooq Oreagba, who said he was diagnosed with an incurable form of cancer over 12 years ago, attributed his survival to early detection.

“At 8:00 AM, I’m in a white coat at the hospital, treating patients in pain. At 8:00 PM, I’m behind a DJ console, setting the stage on fire. How? Because I chose to have it all.
Growing up in a village in Rajasthan, girls were raised with one silent rule: don’t cause a stir, get a degree, and settle down. Until 11th grade, I didn’t even speak English. I had asthma, and during my 12th boards, inhalers failed me; I took injections just to sit through my papers. Still, I scored a 100 in Biology, cracked NEET, and landed an All-India dental seat in Punjab.
Once college started, life settled into a rigid rhythm. My hospital duties ended at 2:30 PM, leaving the rest of the afternoon wide open. One day, I randomly filled out a form to volunteer for a music company. During concerts, standing backstage and watching DJs control the entire crowd, I thought, Why not me?
I pestered the DJs after the show, asking them to teach me. They showed me the basics. I bought my own console, hauled it to my hostel room, and spent my late nights teaching myself how to beat-match and drop tracks. But the backlash was instant.
In college, a professor singled me out and bullied me for having a life outside medicine. It got so toxic that in third year, I had a severe panic attack and collapsed in the hallway. I had two choices: shrink to make them comfortable, or hit back harder.
I kept up with my hospital attendance, studied relentlessly, and won an academic medal that year. That’s when the whispers died. Soon after, I co-founded a medical study app and continued working on my skills as a DJ. Recently, my app received funding, and the same company I had been volunteering with launched me on stage for my debut set in front of thousands.
Today, my schedule is pure adrenaline. Some nights, I’m working on my startup till 5:00 AM, sleeping for two hours and then reporting for hospital duty at 8:00 AM. Once my mandatory hospital internship ends next month, I’m booking my parents front-row tickets so my dad can watch his doctor daughter own the stage.
So, whether it’s a patient waiting for me at the hospital or a crowd waiting for me on stage, I have one plan: show up and give
