Clueless (1995) vs The Craft (1996) — two films released less than a year apart, and somehow they captured completely opposite sides of 1990s teenage style.

At Bronson Alcott High, Cher Horowitz and Dionne Davenport turned school into a fashion show: plaid mini-skirts, knee socks, tiny cardigans, Mary Janes, matching sets and clothes coordinated with military precision.

Costume designer Mona May deliberately created a brighter, more polished teenage world for Clueless. When she researched real Los Angeles high schools, grunge and baggy clothes were everywhere — so Cher’s hyper-styled wardrobe was designed to feel like something new.

Then The Craft arrived.

Sarah, Nancy, Bonnie and Rochelle took the school uniform in exactly the opposite direction: dark lipstick, chokers, crucifixes, oversized coats, knee-high socks, black boots and layers of goth and alternative influence.

Costume designer Deborah Everton used the restrictions of their Catholic-school uniforms to give each girl her own personality. Nancy’s clothes in particular became increasingly dramatic and armour-like as her character changed.

And the contrast is perfect:

Clueless gave the 90s the fantasy of the immaculate Beverly Hills wardrobe.

The Craft gave it the girl who looked like she’d skipped lunch to buy black eyeliner and candles.

Alicia Silverstone, Stacey Dash and Brittany Murphy on one side.

Fairuza Balk, Robin Tunney, Neve Campbell and Rachel True on the other.

Both became hugely influential 90s style references — just for VERY different teenagers.

Be honest: were you trying to dress like Cher… or Nancy Downs?
