Congress leader and Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi on Wednesday introduced flute artist Samar during a press conference in Delhi, where he criticised the alleged use of force by police against protesters demanding the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar. Gandhi described the authorities’ response to the growing protests as the use of “danda” (sticks) and presented the flute performance as a symbolic response to it. Samar played the devotional song “Vaishnav Jan To” on the flute, conveying the message of responding to violence with love and peace. The artist also spoke about his own experience with the police. According to Hindustan Times, Samar alleged that he had been detained and beaten by police personnel. He claimed that protesters had been threatened with sticks and stones and that their phones had been snatched and formatted. These allegations have not been independently established. The press conference comes amid continuing demonstrations against Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar over allegations surrounding the revision of electoral rolls. Opposition parties and protesters have questioned the Election Commission’s handling of the process and demanded Kumar’s resignation, while the controversy has intensified political tensions in the capital. Rahul Gandhi has backed the protesters and criticised the police response, framing the flute performance as a contrast between force and peaceful resistance. The song, associated with Mahatma Gandhi and the values of compassion and non-violence, added a symbolic dimension to the press conference. The episode brought attention to protesters’ allegations of police excesses and the opposition’s demand for accountability amid the ongoing demonstrations.
