Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) founder Abhijeet Dipke was detained by Delhi Police on Friday, October 16, just ahead of the group’s planned ‘Lehra Do Tiranga’ march at Connaught Place in the national capital. Dipke was reportedly heading towards Central Park, where supporters had been called to gather at 5 PM, when police stopped him outside the residence where he had been staying.

Videos circulating online show Dipke stepping out of the building before being approached by police personnel. Following a brief argument, officers escorted him into a police vehicle and drove away. Questioning the action, Dipke argued that he had not violated any law and asked how he could be detained before committing any offence.

Hours before his detention, Delhi Police had visited Dipke’s temporary residence and served him a notice warning against holding the march without permission. Authorities cited prohibitory orders under Section 163 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS), along with concerns over public safety, traffic disruption and maintaining law and order in the busy commercial district.

The New Delhi Municipal Council had also closed Central Park to the public on October 16 and 17, while thousands of security personnel were deployed across central Delhi ahead of the proposed gathering.

The Tiranga March was organised in response to the detention and imprisonment of CJP leaders Ashutosh Ranka and Saurav Das following an earlier demonstration at Jantar Mantar. The group has also been demanding the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar over alleged irregularities in electoral roll revisions. The Election Commission has denied allegations of political bias.

Dipke had earlier maintained that the proposed gathering would be peaceful and questioned why citizens should face police action for waving the national flag. Police, however, have maintained that displaying the Tiranga is not prohibited, but organising an unauthorised assembly in an area under restrictions could invite legal action.
