These photos aren’t really about finishing an Ironman. They’re about the joy of being alive ❤️

Apologies for the essay. Apparently finishing an Ironman wasn’t enough, I now need to write a dissertation about it 🤓😂

I’ve been thinking about the boy I used to be. Called names at school, always picked last for the team. So terrified of being laughed at that I stopped showing up for PE, and eventually school.

I struggled with undiagnosed ADHD, dyslexia and shame around my sexuality. Somewhere along the way, I decided I wasn’t good enough. I carried that belief for years.

At the end of 2019, after losing someone very close to me, life began to unravel. Then came COVID, more grief, and I fell deeper into addiction. I reached a point where I genuinely feared for my life, yet sobriety felt impossible.

But with help, I found recovery. I thought getting sober would make my world smaller. Instead, it gave me a life I never imagined.

I started running to quiet my noisy mind. Then came marathons, mountains, adventures, incredible people and the rather bonkers idea of a full Ironman 🤪

When I signed up, I could barely swim a length of front crawl without gasping for breath. I wasn’t much of a cyclist either.

But I kept showing up. Sometimes badly, sometimes reluctantly. Little by little, I began trusting myself. Training gave my ADHD brain structure and helped me challenge those old stories.

During those nearly 13 hours, I thought about that boy, the people I’ve loved and lost, and the life I never thought I’d have. Mostly, I felt grateful. Even when my legs were screaming.

I’m sharing this because at my lowest, someone else’s story helped me believe there might be a way out.

So if there’s something you’ve quietly wanted to try, give it a go. It doesn’t have to be an Ironman. You don’t have to be quite as bonkers as me! 🤪

I didn’t wait for confidence. I started, and the confidence followed.

What a privilege to be living a life I once couldn’t imagine. Still clearly a little mad, but sober, healthy and lucky to be alive ❤️
