US-based Nigerian-born engineer invents machine that braids hair five times faster than a hairstylist

Nigerian-born engineer Yinka Ogunbiyi has developed HaloBraid, an automated hair-braiding device designed to help professional stylists work faster while reducing the physical strain associated with long braiding sessions.

Ogunbiyi, a Harvard graduate and biomechanical engineer, recently demonstrated the technology, which its developers say can help stylists complete hairstyles up to five times faster. The device is intended to support professional hairdressers rather than replace them, combining automation with the preparation, technique and finishing skills involved in protective hairstyling.

To use HaloBraid, a stylist first sections the hair, applies the required products and begins the braid by hand. The braid is then fed into the machine, which performs the repetitive weaving along its length. The stylist remains responsible for finishing the braid and sealing the ends. The aim is to shorten appointments and reduce repetitive work while preserving the stylist’s role in creating the finished hairstyle.

Ogunbiyi said her inspiration came from years of having her own hair braided and hearing similar concerns from clients and hairdressers. “My braid story starts at age four, sitting between my mum’s legs as she braided my hair for the first time,” she said.

“Since then, I’ve spent thousands of hours getting my hair braided — and heard the same story from stylists and clients again and again: braiding is beautiful, but it takes too much time and too much strain.” Drawing on her biomechanical engineering background, Ogunbiyi worked with hairstylists, designers and other professionals to develop a device intended to address those challenges.

She said the people who shaped the project included her mother, hairstylists and aunties, as well as others familiar with spending hours in a salon chair. The venture has secured $7 million in seed funding in a round led by Seven Seven Six, the venture capital firm founded by Reddit co-founder Alexis Ohanian, who is married to tennis champion Serena Williams.
