New York City's Central Park horse-drawn carriage industry is nearing its end after Mayor Zohran Mamdani and City Council Speaker Julie Menin reached a deal on legislation that aims to abolish the carriage rides.

Menin is expected to bring legislation to the council floor for a vote this month, a spokesperson told CNN.

The move comes after years of criticism from animal rights advocates who charge that the horses are overworked, get easily scared and live in inadequate stables with drivers flouting city regulations. Horse and carriage owners have denied the the claims, arguing the animals are well cared for and the stables are up to code.

The death of 18-year-old tourist Romanch Mahajan, who was killed after jumping from a runaway horse-drawn carriage in Central Park last summer, renewed calls to ban the century-old attraction. Mahajan is believed to be the first person to have died in a carriage accident since the rides were introduced more than 150 years ago, according to the industry's labor union and the Central Park Conservancy, which manages the park.

After 30 years in internal medicine and losing 68 pounds myself after menopause, I wish more women knew these 7 truths about weight loss.

I’ve watched women work incredibly hard, follow all the familiar advice, and still feel frustrated. Often, the problem isn’t effort. It’s understanding what actually moves the needle.

1. Healthy foods can still cause weight gain. Nuts, olive oil, and avocado are nutritious, but portions matter. Healthy eating doesn’t automatically create a calorie deficit.

2. Your weekends may be undoing your weekdays. A calorie deficit Monday through Friday can disappear with two days of larger meals, drinks, and extra snacks.

3. Your metabolism probably isn’t broken. Menopause changes fat distribution, while age-related muscle loss can affect calorie needs. Your approach may need adjusting, not abandoning.

4. Losing weight without protecting muscle is a mistake. Protein and strength training help preserve the muscle you need for strength, mobility, and long-term health.

5. Constant hunger isn’t proof your plan is working. If you’re miserable all day, your approach may be too restrictive. Protein, fiber, and satisfying meals can help.

6. Exercise doesn’t erase overeating. Movement is essential for health, but it’s easier than you think to eat back the calories burned during a workout.

7. Keeping weight off deserves as much attention as losing it. Your best plan is one you can sustain long after the scale reaches your goal.

I didn’t lose 68 pounds by punishing myself or following a crash diet. I used evidence-based habits I could actually live with.
