🇭🇺🔥 Franz Liszt – Hungarian Rhapsody No. 2, S.244/2, Vladimir Horowitz version Khatia Buniatishvili – piano 🎹 • In the same year he composed this rhapsody, 1847, Liszt gave the last paid concert of his career, in Elisavetgrad, during a tour of Ukraine. Soon afterward, he settled in Weimar and began to concentrate on composing. Many of the themes in the Hungarian Rhapsodies, tunes that Romani bands played and that Liszt took for folk music, had been written by upper-middle-class Hungarians. The piece is dedicated to Count László Teleki, who the following year went to Paris as an envoy of the Hungarian revolution and, after the uprising was defeated, was banished. • Listen again and notice, near the end, the moment when the camera shows the hands blurred by movement, just before it opens out onto the stage: that is the loudest stretch of the video, and the sound grows so full that the strikes no longer sound separate, like heavy rain on a roof, when you can no longer tell one drop from the next. • Khatia Buniatishvili, a pianist born in Batumi, Georgia, said in an interview published on classical-music.com that her first success and her first major public appearance were with Liszt, at 15. Her debut album, on Sony Classical, was also devoted to Liszt. Here, she plays the rhapsody as an encore at the George Enescu Festival, in Bucharest, alone at the piano, with the orchestra seated behind her. After the sound returns, the camera catches her from the front: she lifts her head, eyes closed, and moments later her hair flies. • 👉 Follow for the best of classical music daily on your feed. • #liszt #hungarianrhapsody #buniatishvili #classicalmusic
