Hamlet and Ophelia. For an illustrated book retelling Shakespeare's Hamlet. Illustrated by Andrej Dugin - @andrejdug. Germany, 2014.⁣
⁣
This giant carp comes from a line in 'Hamlet': "Your bait of falsehood takes this carp of truth".⁣
⁣
The line is spoken by Ophelia's father, Polonius. Polonius, the king's advisor, uses lies to find out what he wants to know. When he wonders how his son is faring in Paris, he instructs his servant to tell small lies about his son to those who know him; as they correct or confirm these lies, the truth will slip from their lips. The lie is the bait on the hook, and the truth is the carp that's caught.⁣
⁣
Polonius tries the same tactic with his own daughter. Prince Hamlet has begun to act strangely, and Polonius believes Hamlet has lost his mind because he is in love with Ophelia. To find out, he brings his daughter face-to-face with Hamlet, while he hides behind a curtain to eavesdrop on their conversation. This time, Ophelia is the bait.⁣
⁣
In the painting by Moscow-born artist Andrej Dugin (born 1955, @andrejdug),the two stand side by side: Ophelia, the bait, and the truth her father seeks to catch-the giant carp.⁣
⁣
The next three images are not from this painting: Dugin also created separate portraits of the characters for the book. According to him, Hamlet could be any one of us, and he chose his models from among his friends and acquaintances. A tax consultant, a friend of the artist, served as the model for Hamlet's portrait (See image 2). Dugin depicted Hamlet's mother, Queen Gertrude, using the face of singer Madonna, whose children's book he had illustrated with his wife (See image 3). He drew the play's villain-King Claudius, the uncle who poisoned Hamlet's father - using his own face (See image 4).
