BEND, OREGON | The Murderer Behind the Gun

His name is John J. Griffin II. He was 16.

Law enforcement sources have confirmed his identity to multiple national outlets, though Bend Police have not officially released it.

He wasn't a stranger to Silver Rail. He lived just down the road, and his parents told investigators he once walked those same halls as a student.

On Thursday, he came back with a 12-gauge pump-action shotgun. Sources say his mother bought it around his birthday in August. How it ended up in his hands that afternoon is still under investigation.

Years earlier, his mother spoke publicly about how hard school had been for him. At 10, he was struggling, and she hoped specialized teachers could give him the help he needed.

Somewhere between that little boy and Thursday afternoon, something went terribly wrong. Police haven't said what.

But we know what it cost. Three children, ages 5, 8 and 11. A teacher. Two more still fighting for their lives.

Those are the names Bend will carry. His will not be the one we remember.

Cornell University has banned parties at fraternity houses for the rest of the academic year and will add experienced sexual assault investigators to its police force in response to a student’s allegations of gang rape in October 2024.

The university announced the changes on Tuesday as it tried to reassure students, faculty and alumni that it is addressing the ongoing crisis set off several weeks ago by the lawsuit filed by a former undergraduate, known as Jane Doe. The moratorium, which comes days before Homecoming weekend, will allow for a thorough review of fraternity life at Cornell to determine whether it can safely resume, the university president said.
