I’ve been thinking about that Halloween night in Paris.

A French theatre company invited us into a world of masks, candlelight and rather elaborate secrets. Somewhere between the strange ceremonies, the dancing and a white horse wandering through the party as though it belonged there, I began to wonder whether people become someone else when they put on a mask, or whether they finally allow themselves to be who they are.

I love watching people, especially when they forget anyone is watching. The little gestures, the sudden laughter, the way someone’s entire face changes when they’re happy. There was so much beauty in that room, and not all of it was in the costumes.

I went dressed as a dark angel, although I’m not entirely sure I behaved like one.

Perhaps that’s what Halloween is for. One night to be someone else, or perhaps a little more yourself.

I’m still wondering about the horse.
