Running just got cooler (literally). Dubai’s summer Mallathon is officially returning this month. Last week, we said goodbye to my grandfather at 102 years old. When I think about his life, I’m in awe. He grew up in Greece, traveled the world working as a firefighter on cruise ships and later as an engineer, and eventually moved his family to America without knowing a word of English. He built a life through hard work, resilience, and determination. He was married to my grandmother for 68 years, raised two children, became a grandfather to five grandchildren, and lived long enough to meet three great-grandchildren. But more than anything, I’ll remember who he was. Fiercely loyal. Sharp as ever. Quick with a joke. The kind of person who could do just about anything and somehow always knew how to make people laugh. He passed away peacefully at home with his family by his side, and there’s something profound about that. After 102 years, it’s a reminder that life’s greatest measure isn’t what you own, what title you hold, or how much you accumulate. It’s the people who show up for you, the family you build, and the love that surrounds you in the end. A life well lived isn’t measured only by years, but by the legacy you leave behind. By that measure, his life was extraordinary. He would be 103 this September. We’ll miss you deeply, Pappou. Thank you for the stories, the laughter, and the example you set for all of us. 🤍
