“So you’re a lactation consultant, what do you actually?” Well contrary to popular belief the job involves more than staring at boobs all day and some of the ways I help moms never involve seeing their breasts ( and I am NEVER hands on without client consent). There is just as much emotional support, listening support, as hands on evaluation needed when it comes to supporting mamas on a breastfeeding journey and when I’m doing a virtual consultation that is an observational assessment so learning to listen and troubleshoot is key to getting to the root of the problem and developing a plan. But on top of traditional feeding issues, I also consult for acute issues (assess and then refer if diagnosis needed. Lactation consultants cannot diagnose ) and medication safety clearance when it comes to breast-feeding, I also have helped clients navigating when they felt it was time to wean and develop a plan and help process and support their feelings through this among other things. So yes there are a lot of hats 👒 🧢 🎩 when it comes to breastfeeding and supporting a mama’s journey!!!
