„Time, which changes people, does not alter the image we have retained of them.“ Marcel Proust Gerhard Richter’s ‘Betty’ from 1988 is an icon of painting: ageless, the work beams out at us from this masterpiece by Karin Kneffel, occupying the centre, in front of which three figures have positioned themselves. Depicted from behind like the protagonist of the painting they are viewing, the characters are captured by the artist, whilst we ourselves glimpse the scene behind the painted glass pane that fills the pictorial space, which is permeated by diffuse patches of light. A picture within a picture within a picture: Karin Kneffel’s reflection on the act of viewing creates a dialogue that seems to dissolve the boundaries between painted illusion and real space. This theme is all the more impressive given that the artist was once a master student of Gerhard Richter: her homage can still be admired today at the Highlights art fair in Munich at the Kunkel Fine Art stand. #karinkneffel #gerhardrichter #kunst #art #highlights
