🌸 Here’s the recipe ⬇️

🌸 First, you need an evergreen!! I feel like the best containers are the ones that have a beautiful evergreen either in the center, or tucked towards the back center.

🌸 If a container is visible and will be viewed from all sides, I place the evergreen directly in the center. If the planter is tucked up against a wall, or in a corner and the back won’t necessarily be seen, I like to place it in the far back center of the planter. This gives you lots of room to play with your filler plants in the next row, and edging plants around the rim.

🌸 One of my favorite evergreens (it’s what we used above in the matching planters) is the Sky Pencil Holly. While I don’t love this particular holly in a landscape setting, I think they are fabulous in containers. Why? They grow straight up, don’t have any messy branches to contend with, and they give you plenty of room below for your fillers and edge plants.😊

🌸 Some of our other favorite evergreens for containers are: Lemon Cypress, Camellias, Boxwoods, various Spruces, Daphne Odora, Pittosporum, Arborvitae, Thuja, Hinoki cypress, and Cryptomeria. Be sure to check the sun exposure and select your evergreens accordingly.

🌸 Evergreen won’t do as well in containers as they do in the ground, so be sure to water regularly and fertilize them every few weeks, especially in the summer.

🌸 Evergreens can last 2 to 3 years in containers, sometimes longer. Once they outgrow the pot, I usually find them a happy home within the landscape.

Planter Recipe: 🌸

Sky Pencil Holly (1),
Cyclamen (3),
Dusty Miller (3),
Hyacinth (3),
Creeping Fig (5)
Fertilizer, fresh potting soil, Perlite

So what do you do with your Sky Pencil Holly's once the season has ended and you're clearing out your pots? Do you plant them in the landscape because they are perennial shrubs

Sky Pencil Holly is a great idea for a container. I’ve never picked one up before because I also was not a fan of them in the landscape, but I will now to put in containers. Thanks for the tip! 💚
