Cool weather flowers thrive in these early spring days.🌸 Some of my cool weather flower favorites for container planting:
✅️ Pansy
✅️ Viola
✅️ Ornamental Cabbage
✅️ Alyssum
✅️ Nemesia
✅️ Snapdragon
✅️ Ranunculus
If our unpredicatble spring weather throws us temperatures below 28 degrees, it is wise to temporarily cover or take your cool weather plants indoors to protect the blooms.

By February, I’m always itching to get my hands in the dirt and make a few container gardens!
But it’s still winter and, depending on where you live, the plant options might be pretty limited.
Here are my go-to ingredients here in Richmond, VA (7b):
•Hellebore Frostkiss® ‘Anna’s Red’ and ‘Penny’s Pink’
•Hellebore ‘Guess’ and Kira™ ‘Jersey’
•Juniper ‘Blue Pacific’
•Primula Belarina® ‘Cream’
•Snapdragon Twinny™ ‘Orchid’
🔑Keys to Success:
1. Use plants that have already been hardened off, meaning they’ve gradually been exposed to cold and wind for at least a week.
2. Keep soil evenly moist. Hydrated plants are better insulated from the cold.
3. The Snapdragons will be the most sensitive of this bunch. They’re happiest when kept above 40°F.
4. If you can’t easily move your pots into a warm garage or shed to protect them, wrap them in a double layer of frost cloth and tuck them as close to the house as possible…or just wait to plant until the coldest weather is over 🤷♀️
5. I didn’t use any Pansies or Violas in this arrangement, but if you can find them, they’d be a great addition!

Petunias are one of the easiest flowers to grow and one of the best choices for spring container gardening. They bloom nonstop from spring through summer, fill planters quickly so containers look full instead of sparse, and naturally spill over the edges which gives containers that full, professionally planted look.
Petunias also come in a wide range of colors, from soft pastels to bold purples, pinks, reds, and white, making them easy to match with any porch, patio, or garden style.
They thrive in full sun, handle heat well, and work beautifully in front porch planters, patio containers, and hanging baskets. If you want a simple way to add color to your outdoor space without complicated planting combinations, petunias are always a reliable choice.

Make your faux boxwoods look REAL in minutes! 🌿
If you love the look of boxwood topiaries (like I do) but don’t want the maintenance (or don’t get enough sunlight), these simple tricks make faux topiaries look so much more realistic.
🌿 pot in soil like you would a real topiary
🌿cover with spring plantings, I like a combo of bulbs, vines, and pansies
🌿get the right faux topiary, the best ones are not perfectly spherical and are a nice deep green. The lighter green perfectly round ones look cheap!

🌸 Here’s the recipe ⬇️
🌸 First, you need an evergreen!! I feel like the best containers are the ones that have a beautiful evergreen either in the center, or tucked towards the back center.
🌸 If a container is visible and will be viewed from all sides, I place the evergreen directly in the center. If the planter is tucked up against a wall, or in a corner and the back won’t necessarily be seen, I like to place it in the far back center of the planter. This gives you lots of room to play with your filler plants in the next row, and edging plants around the rim.
🌸 One of my favorite evergreens (it’s what we used above in the matching planters) is the Sky Pencil Holly. While I don’t love this particular holly in a landscape setting, I think they are fabulous in containers. Why? They grow straight up, don’t have any messy branches to contend with, and they give you plenty of room below for your fillers and edge plants.😊
🌸 Some of our other favorite evergreens for containers are: Lemon Cypress, Camellias, Boxwoods, various Spruces, Daphne Odora, Pittosporum, Arborvitae, Thuja, Hinoki cypress, and Cryptomeria. Be sure to check the sun exposure and select your evergreens accordingly.
🌸 Evergreen won’t do as well in containers as they do in the ground, so be sure to water regularly and fertilize them every few weeks, especially in the summer.
🌸 Evergreens can last 2 to 3 years in containers, sometimes longer. Once they outgrow the pot, I usually find them a happy home within the landscape.
Planter Recipe: 🌸
Sky Pencil Holly (1),
Cyclamen (3),
Dusty Miller (3),
Hyacinth (3),
Creeping Fig (5)
Fertilizer, fresh potting soil, Perlite

It’s officially Spring here in the UK and I’m loving being back in the greenhouse before work starts each day to begin the process of growing new flowers all over again.
Just a few bulbs and a couple of trays of seeds so far, but soon this little space will be full of cut flower seedlings. 🤍🌱🪴

Don’t you think yesterday definitely felt more like Spring?
Ah, I couldn’t be more excited. So, to bring a little slice of it indoors, I thought I’d have a go at creating a spring planter, taking much inspiration from the lovely Ashlee @the_suffolk_nest.
Here’s what I used:
Bobble Bowl Planter @marquisdawe
Gravel for drainage
Hyacinth x8
Narcissus tete a tete x3
Snowdrop x2
Fresh moss
Magnolia branches foraged from the garden
I loved making this - super easy & really impactful. A great little activity for half term too! Now to sit back & watch it bloom 🌼.
Happy Friday guys,
Gem x
