Salam Alaikum,

We noticed we have gained new followers recently in our Ramadan campaign, so we thought it would be good to introduce some of the key principles behind For Yatim that makes us different from typical orphan charities, for those who aren’t familiar with us.

- Firstly, For Yatim as a foundation is slowly evolving and growing so we are still thinking of new ways we want to help orphans. Initially it started with a group of photographers coming together to help orphans, but over time we have had people like calligraphers, filmmakers, donors, educators and more join together with us - we think of ourselves as one global community (including you) - together for orphans. Alhamdulillah we have so far impacted 400+ orphans globally.

- For orphan care, we really believe in the thought of treating orphans with the best of what we would give to our own children. This is commanded to us in the Quran 2:267. If our own children deserve to go to forests and museums and learn photography and arts, and if we believe our children should be scientists, inventors, famous writers and poets, and study in places like Stanford and Harvard... we want the same for orphans, nothing less.

- We reject the idea that “orphans are just poor kids who will end up working in factories” or that orphans somehow deserve our used-clothes and cheap things. We think every child has within his or herself the potential for greatness, and we want to help the children discover and nurture their talents and achieve their dreams.

- Our main works for orphans are “higher level” experiences and learning - beyond basic food / shelter. We support children for long-term educational development, but also focus on quality-of-life experiences for them (taking them to museums, parks), opening their minds to discovering talents (e.g. teaching them photography, archery etc), and helping them discover bigger dreams. We think children deserve tablets, playstations, telescopes, cameras, bikes just as we would want to give our own children such things - and they should dream the biggest dreams they can.

- We don't like how sometimes orphanages only focus on minimum support for orphans in terms of food and shelter. Or how charities sometimes use orphans as a tool for fundraising, showing children in poor conditions just to raise money. We want to be an ethical charity - we would never fundraise showing poor crying children ; and will preserve the dignity and privacy of children as much as possible (just as we would for our own kids). And we want to focus on helping each child blossom into the best version of themselves through love, mentorship, support and giving them deep belief in themselves. - We also want to be innovative when it comes to how to do our works - the traditional charity / fundraising model isn't sustainable for long-term orphan care. So we want to think about alternative ways of doing more sustainable orphan care (e.g. through art-prints or Waqf systems). - The people behind ForYatim are inventors, tech people, photographers, artists, filmmakers, islamic educators, humanitarians, and more. Yani we're not boring people :) - We are deeply driven by Islam and our faith in every step... faith isn't something hidden in the side, but our main source of inspiration and strength and care. We wish to be ambassadors of Ar-Rahman on Earth with what we can do together insha Allah. Join us in supporting our works, donating, sharing about our works with others, and together let's build a large global community passionate about giving orphans the best of what we have been given ourselves. That will fulfill the Quranic verse 2:267 "O you who believe! Spend (i.e. give in charity) from the *tayyab* (best) things that you have earned and whatever we brought forth for you from the Earth, And not aim for the wretched of it (charitable gifts) (such that) you spend (i.e. give) that you would not take (for yourself) except (with) closed eyes. And know that Allah is *Ghani* (Free of Needs), *Hameed* (Praiseworthy)"
