Flat Earthers are people who believe Earth is flat rather than approximately spherical, despite overwhelming scientific evidence to the contrary. Although some ancient cultures imagined a flat Earth, Greek scholars had established its spherical shape more than 2,000 years ago. The modern Flat Earth movement developed in the 19th century and gained renewed attention through social media, where conspiracy theories, distrust of institutions, and misleading experiments helped spread the belief. Interestingly, you don’t need satellites or space travel to prove Earth is round. Ancient Greek mathematician Eratosthenes estimated Earth’s circumference over 2,200 years ago by comparing shadows in two cities. Lunar eclipses, changing star patterns, and ships disappearing hull-first over the horizon provide further evidence. The irony is that Flat Earthers often use GPS, international flights, and satellite communications while questioning the scientific principles that help make those technologies possible.
