During the Allied invasion of Normandy in June 1944, British soldiers fought their way through French towns and villages as part of the campaign to liberate France from German occupation. This remarkable photograph captures a French woman pouring tea for a British soldier taking cover on a street, offering a moment of kindness amid the destruction and danger of war. For civilians living under German occupation, the arrival of Allied troops brought renewed hope after years of hardship. Despite the fighting continuing around them, many French residents welcomed the soldiers with food, drinks and whatever assistance they could provide. Images like this reveal the human side of the Normandy campaign, where ordinary acts of generosity took place alongside extraordinary violence. 🇫🇷🇬🇧🫖
