A Pennsylvania man has been convicted of attempted first-degree murder after prosecutors say he broke into his ex-wife’s home and shot her five times following a dispute over child support. Darrell Long, 63, attacked his ex-wife, Dawn, while she was asleep on her couch in March 2025. Prosecutors said he first struck her in the face with a .22-caliber rifle, then shot her in the legs, hand and arm as she fought back and tried to escape. At one point, the gun reportedly jammed, giving her a chance to resist before she was shot again. She eventually barricaded herself in a bedroom and used her Apple Watch to call 911. Authorities believe the attack was triggered after Long received paperwork showing Dawn had filed for child support. Prosecutors also said he had previously sent threatening messages through their teenage son, including a warning that the boy could “lose both parents.” During the case, prosecutors said Long showed no remorse, allegedly making domestic-violence jokes and calling himself a “hero” for what he did. Dawn survived but continues to deal with permanent injuries and still has a bullet lodged in her femur. Long was convicted of attempted murder, burglary, aggravated assault and harassment. He is scheduled to be sentenced on December 9, 2026.
