🎬 Ernest Scared Stupid is a 1991 American comedy-horror film directed by John R. Cherry III and starring Jim Varney as the dim-witted but well-meaning Ernest P. Worrell, a sanitation worker in the small town of Briarville, Missouri. Released on October 11, 1991, by Touchstone Pictures (the final theatrical Ernest film under that deal), it is the fifth entry featuring the character and blends slapstick humor with Halloween-themed scares in a PG-rated package running about 89–91 minutes. Supporting cast includes Eartha Kitt as the eccentric Old Lady Hackmore, along with child actors such as Austin Nagler, Shay Astar, and Alec Klapper, plus Jonas Moscartolo as the troll Trantor. In the story, a demonic troll named Trantor was sealed under an oak tree in the 19th century after terrorizing the town by turning children into wooden dolls to feed on their energy; he cursed the Worrell family so that successive generations would grow dumber until one foolish enough (Ernest) would free him on the night before Halloween. While helping local kids build a treehouse in that same tree, Ernest accidentally unleashes the creature, which begins transforming children (and even Ernest’s dog Rimshot) into wooden figures. Ernest teams up with the kids and Old Lady Hackmore to battle Trantor and his minions—whose weakness involves milk—before realizing that unconditional love is the true key to defeating the troll in a climax that restores the victims and saves the town. The film mixes Varney’s signature goofy antics with practical creature effects for a lighthearted family Halloween romp.
