He really won Player of the Match on his Champions League debut

Pau Cubarsí winning Player of the Match on his Champions League debut after coming up against Victor Osimhen still says so much about just how special he is. Making your first appearance in the biggest club competition in Europe is already a huge occasion, but doing it while having to deal with one of the most physical and dangerous strikers around and still coming away as the standout player is something completely different. Cubarsí looked calm, intelligent and completely unfazed by the challenge.

That performance feels even more relevant now with Barcelona preparing to face Galatasaray in the Champions League. Osimhen is exactly the kind of striker who can make life horrible for defenders because of his power, movement, aggression and ability to attack space, but Cubarsí has already shown that he can handle that type of test. He does not rely on being stronger or faster than every striker he faces; he relies on reading the game early, positioning himself well and making sure the attacker never gets the situation they want in the first place.

That is what makes Cubarsí so impressive at such a young age. He plays like someone who has already seen every type of forward imaginable. Whether it is Mbappé running at him in space or Osimhen trying to dominate physically, he rarely seems panicked. He stays patient, chooses his moments and trusts his own understanding of the game. For Barcelona, having a centre-back with that kind of composure going into a difficult away Champions League night is absolutely massive.

Of course, Galatasaray away will be a completely different environment and Osimhen is far too good to ever be taken lightly, but Cubarsí can go into the game knowing he has already dealt with this challenge before. He has faced him on the Champions League stage, performed brilliantly and walked away with Player of the Match. That does not guarantee anything, but it should give Barça huge confidence that one of Europe’s most dangerous strikers is coming up against a defender who has already shown he is more than ready for him.
