PAIN AND SUFFERING
Grateful to have met and shared words with one of my heroes – Jen-Hsun “Jensen” Huang, Founder and CEO of NVIDIA (NASDAQ: NVDA).
Jensen was born in Taiwan, moved to Thailand, then to the US. He went to boarding school in Kentucky, moved to Oregon and graduated early from Aloha High School. He received his undergraduate from Oregon State University then his masters from Stanford University.
I was born in Chicago but my parents immigrated from S Korea. I grew up in Wisconsin, was raised in Hawaii, then moved to California and graduated high school early too. My parents were ministers, so our economic situation wasn’t rich. Pressured with education, I chose corporate america at 17, saved up, hustled on the side and received financial grants. I doubled down on my passions and graduated from California State University simultaneously. I couldn’t afford Stanford’s Graduate School of Business, but qualified for their postgraduate program in Advanced Project Management.
Back to Jensen – He shares his honest story of having low expectations but finding his path. He started his company at a Denny’s diner, where he used to wash dishes and scrub toilets. Even though he didn’t know how to write a business plan and encountered troubles early on, he prevailed and NVIDIA is now the leading technology provider powering some of our most important industries like gaming, mobile and AI.
I shared with Jensen that my father was a Computer Science major, studied AI back in 1980 and that he bought us an IBM386 when I was 3. While I had a lot of blessings growing up, a lot of it was overshadowed by my struggles as a second generation Korean-American in middle america. Jensen’s story helped set perspective and strangely enough, Jensen reminded me of my dad.
Alas, my pain and suffering was a precursor to who I am today. I’m still figuring it all out but hearing stories like his is the blueprint for my inspiration and motivation for success.
PS: Born in Chicago, I grew up with another hero who also taught me the importance of hard work, determination, competition, and greatness. Who would have known two of my heroes were born on the same exact date!
