The year Pete Seeger was the featured recipient of the "Harvard Arts Medal" he recounted to me in a stroll through the Yard how he was forced to withdraw from Harvard because his grade point average had fallen below that required for his scholarship. (He was busy with important activism, evidently.) Harvard's duplicity when it comes to notables - years later - is notorious. Pete was listed as "Class of 40" with no account of his forced withdrawal. Nevertheless, he was gracious enough to accept the invitation. Nelson Mandela's treatment was not much different.
