No skills, no sportsmanship — a repeat offender of on-court outbursts on the ATP Tour!
The incident took place on October 5 during the first round of qualifying at the Shanghai Masters, where TerenceAtmane Terence Atmane faced Australian player Bernard Bernard Tomic. He had been visibly agitated throughout the match, already smashing his racket and slamming the net tape on multiple occasions. Things completely spiraled out of control when he trailed 3–5 in the deciding set: he hurled his racket toward the spectator stands. The racket struck the courtside barrier and bounced back, landing dangerously close to fans in the front row, sending a shock through the crowd.
He then repeatedly signaled his retirement with hand gestures, and before leaving the court, he lashed out by whipping his racket against the ground. The umpire issued only a verbal warning on the spot.
The incident has sparked considerable controversy, mainly on two fronts:
● The punishment was far too lenient. Many feel that deliberately throwing a racket toward the audience is egregious and should have resulted in an immediate default or even a suspension, rather than just a verbal warning. By comparison, at the China Open in Beijing, Daniil Medvedev was defaulted and fined 220,000 for accidentally hitting a spectator with a ball during a dead-ball situation — the disparity between the two cases is striking.
Media outlets have also dug up Atmane’s recent track record, showing this is hardly an isolated incident. During the US Open, he was fined 7,500 for a verbal altercation, and in late September at the Jingshan Open in China, he similarly retired from a match after throwing his racket.
As of now, the ATP has not announced any further disciplinary action against him.
