At 27, Wilson Wambugu was sentenced to 80 years in prison, with his earliest possible release date set from 2076 to 2105. He was facing a lifetime behind bars for a crime he maintained he never committed. But on October 16, 2026, Wilson walked out of Kamiti Maximum Prison a free man after the High Court in Nyeri overturned his conviction. His troubles began in 2023 when he was working as a farmhand for his aunt in Nyeri, earning KSh 6,000 monthly. He spent KSh 5,000 of his salary buying medication for his mother, who was mentally ill, leaving him with just KSh 1,000 for himself. According to the account, a cousin once asked him to buy alcohol. Wilson explained that he could only afford a cup of tea. The cousin allegedly threatened to teach him a lesson. Three hours later, police arrested Wilson over allegations of defiling three young boys. The boys later reportedly said they did not know him and had been pressured into implicating him. The case also allegedly involved forged details. Wilson was convicted in July 2025 and sentenced to 80 years in prison. Meanwhile, his mother reportedly never knew what had happened to her son because of her mental condition. His breakthrough came when human rights lawyer John Wangai took up his case pro bono, helping him challenge the conviction. On October 16, 2026, Justice Kizito Magare allowed Wilson's appeal, quashed his convictions on all four counts, set aside the 80-year sentence and acquitted him. The court declined to order a retrial and directed that his name be removed from the offenders register. Wilson finally regained his freedom, breaking down in tears as he recounted his ordeal.
