Sometimes autism itself doesn’t feel like the most disabling part. It’s having to spend our lives constantly trying to understand and accommodate non-autistic people, while rarely being given that same grace in return. Autism IS a disability. An invisible one. There is so much happening beneath the surface that other people cannot see, feel, or fully understand. We need people to believe us when we say something is difficult, overwhelming, inaccessible, or genuinely disabling. We deserve understanding. We deserve accommodations. We deserve belonging without having to constantly prove that we are struggling enough to deserve it. We live in a world that can become deeply ableist when we don’t conform to what is considered “normal.” When we communicate differently, speak up about injustice, have needs that inconvenience others, or respond in ways people don’t understand, we can become outcasted, scapegoated, projected onto, and disbelieved. Autistic people spend so much of our lives learning how to exist in a world built around non-autistic ways of being.
