TNHT Staff: @fashionswarrior _______ Neighbors, this is nasty as hell! A Washington, D.C., woman says the rat problem at her apartment complex has gotten so out of control that she popped the hood of her car and discovered it was infested with rodents. Willette Joyner, who has lived at Parkway Plaza in Northeast D.C. for more than 20 years, says she broke down in tears. “I started crying. I didn’t know which way to go,” she recalled. Joyner says rats have even jumped out of trash cans, and she blames the worsening infestation on overflowing garbage and poorly maintained sidewalks. _______ Joyner says she contacted management company Borger Residential and even asked a manager to inspect her vehicle, but his only response was, “I’m sorry.” Community advocates have since helped her contact several D.C. agencies and her Ward 5 councilmember. Former neighborhood commissioner Jacqueline Manning says residents deserve better, declaring, “You want us to pay taxes, you want us to pay rent, you want us to age in place in the District of Columbia, treat us well.” She also fears colder weather could drive even more rats into residents’ cars and homes. _______ Meanwhile, D.C. lawmakers are considering the “REMY” Act, which would strengthen rodent-control enforcement and introduce a pilot program for rat-proof trash cans. The proposal could also allow the city to charge negligent property owners up to three times the cost of addressing infestations. The legislation recently cleared its first committee vote. _________ 🎥: @7newsdc
A happy tiger is tormenting Brazil. Wearing a red tang jacket, the fat cat dances across phone screens; it is the mascot for a wildly popular digital slot machine. But late last month Brazil’s government banned the “little tiger game”—along with all online casinos and sports-betting. Since it was legalised by a right-wing government in 2018, gambling has exploded in Brazil. Last year the country became the world’s fifth-largest betting market. Though it generates lots in taxes—gambling contributes nearly as much to the public finances as agriculture—many Brazilians have turned against the sector.
