At the CAPE 35th Anniversary Gala this weekend, I spoke to many people who all said the same thing: when they started down their path in the TV/film as Asian creatives in LA, they discovered CAPE, and instantly felt like they were not alone. That is a true testament of the power of this organization. Authentic representation onscreen is important, and I’ve successfully connected with my disabled community in LA... but as a mixed-asian creative, I didn't find my place as quickly… curses to my AutiHD-ness! Some day I hope to work to do my part to increase the celebration of disabled, asian creators, because there's a LOT of us! I’m adopted, and half Korean, and I was raised identifying as Asian, but not specifically Korean. I started on a journey to discover my heritage, and it's really empowered me. I realized that for me, exploring my heritage is important for personal acknowledgment, and respect, and that’s what connecting with our community really means to me. Wearing this modern interpretation of the traditional Hanbok, felt like a big moment, taking away all of the internal doubt I have about not being Korean β€œenough.” Wearing it was a celebration of Korean tradition and design, and it made me feel powerful. There were very specific details about my dress, and hair that had very traditional and modern meaning. My dress was a modern take on a traditional Korean style, very modern colors, and made entirely of Korean silk. Elements were modern, like the straps on the dress, historically much wider, and functional versus fashionable. Ribbons tied onto my single braid, were traditionally worn by younger women, but the red ribbon on the braid is a modern interpretation of my single marital status. Thanks so much to @capeusa for the invitation, and for honoring The Pitt for raising the bar for API representation, and to the women who helped me feel empowered: Dress by: Eunjoo Kim | @meehee.hanbok Style: Laura Schuffman | @lauraschuffman Hair: Christy Tagatac | @christytagatac Makeup: Hinako | @nhinako_makeup Photos/Video: @sthanlee @lostboat @theloungebooth @capeusa @HBOMax @johnwellsproductions #representationmatters #thePitt
