The table is set, the guests have arrived, and dinner is served. Most evenings, Max hosts a party of pigs and assorted hangers-on. These wild warthogs have taken up residence around the Nairobi Nursery and treat it as their own personal kingdom. They come and go into the black rhino’s stockade as they please — sometimes with his blessing, other times much to his chagrin. Although Max is blind, he is completely aware of the pigs’ comings and goings, even if he knows they will descend with or without an invitation! We always marvel at how the smallest creatures have the most audacity. (Speaking of small-but-audacious creatures, note the oxpeckers perched atop Max! These birds pick ticks and other parasites from their host. In the wild, they also serve as an early alarm system, alerting rhinos of approaching danger.) — Maxwell is unique orphan: He is blind, as a result of a congenital eye condition, and thus has a forever home with us. We rescued him as an infant back in 2007, after our Keepers found him lost and crying in the forest. Because a blind rhino would not be able to survive in the wild, Max has a forever home with us. Our ‘Nursery patriarch’ is a much-loved member of the family.
