I was born and raised in Birmingham, Alabama, where, like most girls in the South, I was taught to be nice. Be polite. Be agreeable. Don’t make a fuss. Don’t make anyone uncomfortable. Especially a man. Even when someone is mistreating you. Even when you’re being taken advantage of. Even when every instinct in your body is telling you something isn’t right. Smile, be gracious, and whatever you do, don’t hurt anyone’s feelings. One of the great gifts of becoming a grown ass woman is realizing what a spectacular load of bullshit that is. I’ve recently moved back to the South, and while so much has changed for the better, I can still feel that old expectation hanging in the air. That women should be accommodating. That kindness means compliance. That standing up for yourself is somehow unbecoming. Don’t get me wrong, I believe in kindness. Deeply! But I no longer confuse kindness with making myself small for someone else’s comfort. Your boundaries are not an insult. Your intuition is not an overreaction. And most importantly your safety is more important than someone’s feelings. So here’s a little reminder, especially for the women who were raised to be good girls: You’ll be a better woman if you quit being a nice girl ✨
