I’ve tried to write this for a while and I can’t seem to get all the right words out. Tok was truly one of a kind. She was strong yet gentle, lenient but firm, and always the glue that kept our large family close. As a woman, she represented the best of us. I don’t need to list all her achievements; it’s clear she left an indelible mark on both people and our nation. But the mark she left on me… I can’t even begin to describe it. I remember when I had a little bald patch and jokingly said to her, “Must’ve come from your side of the family 😂” (have you seen my dad? 👴🏼). We had a little giggle. The next day, I got a call from Tok: “Hello Ally, I’m in the lobby of your office. Can we go to the hospital to get your hair checked?” I was shocked! And I felt bad, because I’m sure my joke had weighed heavily on her mind. With 18 grandchildren and 4 cicits, she still gave every one of us equal love. I know for a FACT that none of us ever felt less loved than the others. As you all probably know, today marks the end of my pantang period. Bringing Eden into the world was tough but immensely worth it, because he got to meet his wonderful Nyang. Just 2 weeks ago, I was walking to the kitchen when I saw the front door open. Who else but Tok herself, arriving unannounced just to see us and her cicit, Eden. She would have held him all day if she could. She kept saying, “Ally, no pillows in his crib okay?” She had endless tips for me. I only wish Eden had a bit more time with her, though we were so privileged to have her for 100 years. Tok, I know you’re in a better place now. May Allah grant you the highest levels of Jannah. May we meet again, InsyaAllah 🕊️🙏 Please look over us and Eden. Love you, my angel. I have so many voice notes as that was Tok’s main way to send us messages. I wanted to share a few. Here’s one where I told her I was going away for 3 months. She always worried for us but still wanted us to have fun. I’m going to miss her voice. Another voice note which I thought was quite funny. Her “love you, sayang” is something I’ll cherish always. 🕊️
