Menopause doesn’t just change your hormones. It can change what’s happening inside your blood vessels, too. ❤️

And this is something I want more women to understand.

As we move through perimenopause and menopause, estrogen levels begin to fluctuate and eventually decline.

Now, estrogen does more than regulate your reproductive health. It also helps support the production of nitric oxide, a tiny but powerful molecule that helps your blood vessels relax, supports healthy blood flow, and plays an important role in cardiovascular health.

As estrogen declines, nitric oxide signalling can also be affected. This is one of several reasons cardiovascular health deserves more attention during this stage of life.

The good news? There are simple, everyday ways to support your body’s natural nitric oxide pathways.

🥬 Eat your greens. Spinach, rocket, and other leafy vegetables provide dietary nitrates that your body can convert into nitric oxide.

❤️ Include beetroot. Steamed beetroot is a wonderful addition to your meals.

🍎 Enjoy pomegranate and walnuts. They provide beneficial plant compounds that support vascular health.

🚶‍♀️ Keep moving. Walking, strength training, and regular aerobic exercise support endothelial function and nitric oxide signalling.

🪥 Look after your oral microbiome. Avoid unnecessarily using strong antiseptic mouthwashes, which can disrupt the oral bacteria involved in converting dietary nitrates into nitric oxide.

🎵 Try humming. Humming can temporarily increase nitric oxide levels in the nasal passages, although we don’t yet have strong evidence that it improves cardiovascular outcomes.

And please remember, these habits complement, rather than replace, monitoring your blood pressure, cholesterol, blood sugar, and overall cardiovascular risk with your healthcare professional.

Your changing hormones deserve understanding, not fear.

Menopause is a natural transition. And the more we understand our bodies, the better we can support them through every stage of life.

Share this with a woman you care about. ❤️
