You know he loves it 🤭 @we.aint.worried

last night I did my first ever keynote talking about something our society really hates talking about: suicide. @lovelikeremi foundation was born out of a tragedy that they’re now doing everything in their power to prevent from happening again.

did you know the latest youth risk behavior study found that 1 in 5 United States high school students reported to consider dying by suicide? I was once one of those students. My page here is focused on being a light in the world but I also come with my own darkness, my past is one that was filled with bullying, suicide ideation and depression. One that included telling my parents “I don’t want to be alive anymore.”

A teacher, who witnessed my story and became one of my safest places joined me on stage to share how my story took her on a journey from being a math teacher to now spending the last decade as the school’s guidance counselor. She played a pivotal role in my survival story and is even more evidence (like we need it) that teachers have an incredibly important & necessary role to play in our lives.

Last night my keynote was not only sharing my story but reminding everyone in the room the power of our words. Right now in this world, choosing to say the kind words is the most impactful choice one can make. Every person you choose to open your mouth around has to deal with your words - in person, online, in secret. Words have more power than we ever give them credit for. We must remember that every person is battling something we likely know nothing about. And if you have a choice between lifting up or bringing down, I really hope you choose the lift.

I ended my keynote with simple words but words that matter: “the more we sit in rooms like this one and have these deeply hard, but important conversations the more the narrative changes around mental health. It is not something to be ashamed about and it is certainly something everyone should be able to access treatment for. To all of you in this room tonight, I hope you know that you are not alone. You deserve to be here. And I’m so happy that you’re here.”
