✧ 𝘒𝘪𝘭𝘭𝘦𝘳 𝘘𝘶𝘦𝘦𝘯 • 52 𝘺𝘦𝘢𝘳𝘴 𝘖𝘤𝘵𝘰𝘣𝘦𝘳 11, 1974 ❀༉ Fifty-two years ago today, Killer Queen / Flick of the Wrist was released in the UK as a double A-side single. Written by Freddie for Sheer Heart Attack, Killer Queen reached No. 2 in the UK and No. 12 in the US, introducing Queen to a whole new audience. ❀༉ Elegant, theatrical, and wonderfully cheeky, this song has so much of Freddie’s personality woven into it. The harmonies, Brian’s guitar, and the way Freddie delivers every line…so much detail tucked into three minutes. Freddie explained: “The words came first, and the sophisticated style I wanted to put across came first.” ❀༉ In her book, Mary Austin remembers Freddie writing Killer Queen at the piano, playing a few chords, pausing to write, then returning to them. After years of trying to establish himself, she felt he was beginning to trust his own abilities. She remembers a lighter, happier Freddie during this period…skipping rather than walking, suggesting friends come for dinner, and talking about plans for tomorrow. ❀༉ Mary also shares a lovely champagne memory. Before an EMI executive and his girlfriend visited their flat, she bought a bottle of Moët & Chandon. Freddie worried one bottle wouldn’t be enough, then forgot to chill it, so it was served warm! Mary went without a glass, worried there wouldn’t be enough to go around. She doesn’t know whether that bottle inspired the lyric, but I love hearing this little memory alongside it. 🥂 ❀༉ As the song found its audience, Mary remembers his relief and excitement. Watching him on Top of the Pops, she saw him stepping into a more confident stage persona…prepared, energised, and completely in control. Brian later called Killer Queen “the turning point.” Fifty-two years later, we’re still enjoying every delicious little detail. 📖 Mary Austin’s recollections from A Life in Lyrics • Link in bio 🎬 Footage: @officialqueenmusic 🎞️ Edited by me for creative/fan purposes © Queen Productions Ltd. ⚠️ Tribute only-no copyright infringement intended. #Freddiemercury #Queen #KillerQueen #SheerHeartAttack #ClassicQueen
