Imagine a massive volcano collapsing in on itself and filling with water—that’s the origin of Laguna De Apoyo, which formed 20,000+ years ago. Nicaragua has a chain of volcanoes stretching from north to south. Laguna De Apoyo lies between Mombacho Volcano to the south and Masaya Volcano to the north. From the shores, you can see the tip of Mombacho, often shrouded in swirling clouds.
