In search of a meal to begin the process of fattening up for winter. When the fall salmon run is happening the bears return to the rivers in search of high value food to satisfy their need to gain weight. They will even catch salmon and only eat certain high caloric parts like the salmon roe and discard the rest. Of course those discarded parts never go to waste as so many other birds and animals are waiting for any bits and pieces left behind. by @dmichiel

Finally after watching this beautiful brown bear family for some time at quite a distance, they came closer for a quick soak in the river. Unfortunately sudden movement by another photographer spooked them and they were gone. My only chance… but so pleased to have seen them. I hope they find a safe place for the winter months and that I might have another opportunity to see them next year. by @dmichiel

Another drop of colour and beauty with this wintering Anna’s Hummingbird. He might start rethinking not migrating when the “bomb cyclone” hits the island this week. Hope he can find a safe place to hunker down. by @dmichiel

A touch of cuteness to brighten a grey rainy day. This young Yellow-bellied marmot pup enjoys some tender grass snacks. Marmots are a large diurnal burrowing rodent and are members of the squirrel family. by @dmichiel
