I had so much fun playing with the Encore/Coda wind ensemble! One of the compositions we played was “A Town With An Ocean View” by Joe Hisaishi

50 YEARS OF ANDREW SCOTT. ❤️🎭

Some performances stay with you. Others change your standards for what great acting can be. And then there is Vanya (after Chekhov’s Uncle Vanya).

Seeing Andrew Scott perform Vanya was one of the greatest theatrical experiences of my life. Even years later, so many performances struggle to reach the standard he set that evening.

What Scott accomplished on that stage was nothing short of extraordinary. Playing every male and female character himself, without relying on costume changes, props or pre-recorded sequences to distinguish them, he transformed into entirely different people while remaining in the same costume. Sometimes, all it took was the slightest change in his gaze for an entirely new character to emerge. One moment, you were watching one person; the next, someone completely different was standing before you.

That is what I call a true masterclass in acting. An astonishing feat of concentration, imagination and control, and yet it never felt like a technical exercise. I was completely absorbed, hanging on to every word, reluctant to miss even a second.

And this is what makes Andrew Scott such a remarkable actor to me.

Whether on stage in Vanya, Present Laughter or Hamlet, or on screen as Moriarty in Sherlock and in the recently released Elsinore, he disappears into his characters while somehow remaining unmistakably himself.

There is something uniquely his about the way he inhabits a role. He doesn’t simply play a character; he makes it his own so completely that you could almost believe it had been written specifically for him. You recognise the transformation, yet you can still sense the distinctive personality, intelligence and energy that make him Andrew Scott.

That combination is incredibly rare. And Vanya remains, for me, one of the finest demonstrations of it.

Happy 50th birthday to one of the greatest actors of our time. Thank you for the performances, the characters and the moments of theatre that remind us what this art form can achieve. ❤️
