Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta has announced a series of women-focused initiatives aimed at improving campus safety, strengthening public infrastructure and creating new livelihood opportunities across the national capital.

In a recent meeting with presidents and vice presidents of Delhi University’s women’s colleges, Gupta discussed concerns ranging from poorly lit roads and unsafe surroundings to inadequate public transport and infrastructure gaps. The Chief Minister directed officials to establish a dedicated WhatsApp group connecting student representatives with administrative and police authorities, allowing campus-related issues to be raised directly with the government.

Student representatives from colleges including Lady Shri Ram, Gargi, Maitreyi and Jesus and Mary participated in the interaction. Gupta also encouraged young women to contribute their perspectives to Delhi’s upcoming Youth Policy and pre-budget consultations.

Meanwhile, the Delhi government has launched an application portal for its DURGA e-auto scheme, which aims to create self-employment opportunities while improving last-mile connectivity. Under the initiative, 1,300 pink electric autos will be allocated in the first phase, including 1,170 for women and 130 for transgender persons.

The scheme is intended to help beneficiaries become owners and drivers of electric autos while promoting cleaner and safer public transportation, particularly around major transit networks.

The government has also outlined plans to install 50,000 CCTV cameras and one lakh streetlights across Delhi to strengthen public-space security. Gupta said improved lighting and surveillance would help address safety concerns, particularly around educational institutions.

Existing support mechanisms, including One Stop Centres offering medical, legal and counselling assistance, the 181 Women Helpline and the 112 emergency response number, form part of the broader safety framework.
