Now at the final press conference for tonights big game, we wont be covering the game tonight but as a fan, I’ll be at the game!! It’s a busy old room though, hoping that I’ve bagged myself a good position in the room and that I’ll get noticed as the mic makes its way around. #sports #legs #tights #heels #ai

I think one of the reasons this took me so long to understand is because autism wasn’t new to me. Hannah’s brother is autistic. Weve been through the assessments, learned so much about autism, and spent years advocating for him. I thought I knew exactly what to look for, but I was looking at everything through the lens of how autism presented in my son. I was looking for the classic signs and all of the red flags. When she didn’t fit that picture, autism was easy to question and even easier to rule out. Even when my gut started telling me there might be something more, I pursued multiple assesments but I was told she didn’t meet the criteria because she made eye contact, communicated well, was socially engaged and was thriving academically. From what they observed, there wasn’t enough that fit the picture of autism they were looking for. After years of being dismissed, we found someone who looked beyond the more obvious presentation and took the time to understand the whole picture. All of a sudden so many years of questions started making sense. I think this is why conversations about autism in girls matter so much. It’s not that autistic girls all present one way or that boys all present another. But for a long time, our understanding of autism was heavily shaped by the presentations we were most accustomed to recognizing. Girls who were able to adapt, compensate, or mask could be much easier to overlook, but their struggles were still there. I share our experience because I know there are parents out there being told not to worry while something in their gut keeps telling them there’s more to understand. There’s so much I wish I had known then, but I’m so thankful that we finally have a better understanding of her, and what she experiences, so that we can better support her. 💜 @michelledorit #autism #anxiety #gifted #girls
