Here are the results of my latest round of material tests, in which I’ve been experimenting with molybdenum, volcanic sand, carborundum, titanium siliconite, peridot, lapis lazuli and red garnet, mixing each of them into a stoneware clay body before throwing a series of small bowls.

Once glazed with a feldspathic crackle glaze, the bowls were reduction fired to cone 10, around 1290ºC, in my gas kiln. The results are always difficult to predict, which is one of the things I like the most about these experiments. Some materials produce effects that become significant parts of my practice, while others end up in the materials box and are unlikely to ever be used again.

I’ve made a much longer video documenting this entire series of experiments, from preparing the materials and throwing the bowls through to the finished results after firing. If you’d like to see the tests in more detail, the full video is now on YouTube, accessible via the link in my Linktree.

I’d also be interested to hear if there are any particularly reactive or unusual metals, minerals or other materials you think I should try in a future round of tests. Thanks for watching!

turning 27.
in a city i wasn’t born in.

growing up, i felt an inexplicable pull towards lahore.
i had never seen the city.
but, i missed it.

four years ago, i decided to follow that feeling. i didn’t know what awaited me. i just knew i had to be here. as if something was waiting.

tomorrow, as i turn 27, i can’t imagine my becoming without these four years i’ve spent in lahore.

so much of my becoming, i owe to this city. to its streets, its women, its people.

i want to build my home here. i want to grow old here. i want to bring my loved ones here. and perhaps one day, die here too.

an ancient hug between nowshera and lahore.

perhaps belonging has very little to do with where a life begins.

perhaps it answers to something older than blood, something that cannot be inherited or explained, only recognised. something that exists beyond the circumstances of our birth, beyond the places we are told are ours by virtue of having come from them.

i don’t know what it is that makes a place feel like it has always known you. i only know that sometimes, long before you arrive, something in you already belongs there.

happiest of birthdays, haider ali shah

who i can say with absolute certainty is one of the most talented visual artists in the country. always a privilege being photographed by her. 🫂

Perhaps happiness is having nowhere to rush on an October afternoon. Sooo… shall we put another log on the fire? 🪵🍂

It’s getting colder, but I’m still finding reasons to stay out in the garden a little longer. Especially when it looks like this. A warm blanket, something hot to drink, and suddenly heading back inside can wait 🥹🤎

Bo gdy robi się coraz chłodniej - każdy powód, żeby zostać dłużej na zewnątrz jest dobry, zwłaszcza w takich okolicznościach 🫠 Niech ta jesień trwa! 🥹🍂
