Istanbul is famous for its outsized cat population who you’ll find roaming free, keeping watch, and mingling with the humans. Meet the cats who rule the city. By breakfast, the cats are already making the rounds. In Istanbul, they turn up in cafés, markets, bookstores, waterfronts and anywhere people gather. Istanbul’s official visitor guide gives cats top billing and calls them the “Royalty of Istanbul.” Istanbul’s cats are independent by design. Most don’t belong to one person, and they’re perfectly happy picking their own lookout points, routes and favorite corners. Istanbul is often cited as home to one of the largest concentrated street-cat populations in the world. If there’s a spot to claim, a cat has probably claimed it first. What’s ours is theirs. Istanbul’s cats are professional photobombers. They show up in wedding photos, tourist’s shots, and plenty of camera rolls they weren’t invited into. Istanbul helps take care of its street cats with veterinary care, vaccinations and dedicated “paw parks” where animals have space to play. Resist the urge to scoop one up and take it with you. Some have entire neighborhoods looking after them. An entire film was made about the cats of Istanbul. According to the director, “The real soul of the city is actually, I think, the cats.” Why are they so comfortable here? Because they’ve been here for centuries. They arrived on trading ships as far back as Byzantium, originally brought in to control pesky critters in cargo holds.
