Texas did what Washington would not, and the numbers are the receipt. In the last fiscal year, southwest border apprehensions fell to 98,708, a 95 percent collapse from the 1.8 million a year the country endured under the last administration, the lowest total in the Border Patrol’s history. For the first time ever, a fiscal year ended with zero Border Patrol releases into the interior. That did not happen by accident. It happened because Texas built the wall, strung the wire, and held the line while the federal government argued. The contrast is the other three border states. Arizona, New Mexico, and California are run by Democratic governors who fought enforcement, welcomed sanctuary policies, and treated the border as someone else’s problem. Abbott was the governor who sent troopers and guardsmen, floated buoys, and dared the courts to stop him. The map tells the story in one color: one state secured, three states surrendered, and the crossings went where the welcome was. Tuesday decides whether the exception holds. Hinojosa has campaigned against the whole posture: the enforcement, the designations, the stance of a state that defends itself. Her party already runs the other border states, and the results there are the preview. Texas can keep the governor who secured the border, or it can join the states that did not. The border is not an abstraction in Texas. It is the backyard, and the backyard is finally quiet.
