It was about eight years ago that I learned of the tragic plight of the rhino and it changed my life forever. Having served in war, I knew what we humans were capable of terrible things, but the first time I saw a rhino with its face hacked off because of poachers, I found myself in complete shock - I truly didn't think we were capable of this.

But, I was able to take those initial emotions of sadness, anger, confusion, etc. and harness them in a way that I had not done since my time at war. You see, many veterans tuck those emotions away when they come home and hope to never experience them again. The rhino species helped me to overcome my trauma and embrace my inner self. I'm a spiritual and godly person and I do believe that everyone has moments in their life that are perfect, yet many folks don't have the courage or the willpower to harness those special moments that are meant to change their lives. That rhino may have died in the video I watched, but she lives on as my courage to continue fighting for wildlife.

On this World Rhino Day, I'd like to give thanks to the rhino species for allowing me to heal and saving me from a purposeless life. And, as the founder of @vetpaw, I give thanks to all of you who have believed in my vision and our mission; especially our Veterans and team members. The rhino will not go extinct on our watch.
