One European nation has spent nearly 1.54 times more per person than its closest rival. The data spans 28 years of household consumption estimates from Eurostat—and the lead has shifted only 5 times.

🏆 FINAL RANKING
1. Italy — 277 €
2. Ireland — 180 €
3. Spain — 173 €
4. Iceland — 163 €
5. Cyprus — 94 €
6. Malta — 83 €
7. France — 71 €
8. Slovakia — 68 €
9. Hungary — 66 €
10. Croatia — 66 €
11. Luxembourg — 64 €
12. Greece — 61 €

In 1995, Spain held the top spot at €169 per resident. The United Kingdom surged ahead in 1997 with €208, but Italy claimed the number one position in 1999 and has held it unbroken for 22 years. By 2022, Italy reached €277 per head—a commanding lead over Ireland at €180 and Spain at €173. Iceland climbed to fourth place by 2014, breaking into the top tier. These figures are statistical estimates built from user surveys, consumption habits and street prices, not recorded sales. Since the 2014 ESA 2010 revision, EU national accounts must include illegal drugs in household final consumption expenditure.

Key moments:
• 1995: Spain leads at €169 per head
• 1997: United Kingdom takes number one at €208
• 2001: Italy seizes the lead for the final time
• 2006: Ireland closes within €7 of Italy
• 2014: Iceland passes the United Kingdom into fourth
• 2022: Italy at €277—1.54 times Ireland's €180

Where does your country rank? And what surprises you most about these 28-year trends?

Prensa Libre.
