Class is in session for A History of Design. Lesson one: you’re living in layers. As an interior designer, I have always been fascinated by how design and architecture has shifted throughout history. Much like fashion, give it just one century and the entire shape and structure and attitude of design can change completely. And that really spills over into our homes. You might have Georgian bones, a Victorian extension, Edwardian panelling, a 1970s kitchen and a contemporary sofa all under one roof. A collage of decades, all stacked, layered, and bumping shoulders.  Good interior design isn’t about picking one era and sticking to it. It’s about understanding where things come from, learning to read the architectural details and knowing how to mix old and new in a way that feels considered, not chaotic.  So I invite you to get your nerd on with me. Starting with tracing the design evolution of the humble chest of drawers, from the Georgian period right through to present day, where we happily nick a bit of everything. Homework: what’s the oldest layer living in your home? Original Georgian features? Victorian cornicing? A gloriously questionable 1970s relic? Tell me below.  Next week, a deep dive into the Georgian era. Class dismissed.
