Most drivers warm up their engine by letting it idle for 5 to 10 minutes. It is a habit passed down from our parents, and for old cars it made sense. For modern cars, it is the slow way to do it. Why warming up matters: oil keeps the metal parts inside your engine from grinding on each other. When the engine is off, that oil sinks to the bottom. When you start it, the oil pump needs a moment to push it back to every part. That takes about 20 to 30 seconds. Why long idling is the wrong way: a cold engine is bad at turning fuel into vapor, so the car’s computer feeds it extra fuel to keep it running. Some of that extra fuel can land on the cylinder walls, where the pistons slide, and rinse off the oil film protecting them. Idling warms the engine slowly, so it stays in this cold phase longer. The right way: wait about 30 seconds, then drive off gently with a light foot on the gas. Gentle driving puts the engine to work, and an engine that is working makes more heat. That heat spreads to the oil, the transmission and the catalytic converter, which idling barely warms. Think of how a gentle jog warms your whole body, while standing still warms very little. The U.S. Department of Energy says the same, and most carmakers recommend driving off gently after about 30 seconds. Exceptions: freezing mornings may need 1 to 2 minutes. Very old classic cars with carburetors need a few minutes. Electric cars need no warm-up at all. Remote start is still idling, so keep it short. The cost: idling gets 0 miles per gallon. Ten minutes a day burns roughly 18 gallons of fuel a year, around $60 at about $3.30 a gallon, and heavy idling can mean more frequent oil changes.

Trump’s tariffs cost American farmers their biggest soybean customer, and family farms are the ones paying for his trade war. When China stopped buying US soybeans, growers in Iowa, Illinois, Kansas and Nebraska lost the market they’d spent decades building. The farm aid he keeps announcing doesn’t come close to covering it. The newest round, 8 billion for diesel, won’t even have payment rates until November, after the midterm votes are counted. Then he went after cattle ranchers. Just as ranchers were finally getting good prices for their cattle, Trump quadrupled the import quota for cheap Argentine beef trimmings. He did it over objections from the National Cattlemen’s Beef Association and from Republicans who represent cattle states. Farm debt is at a record, farm bankruptcies are climbing, and rural America is watching a president who promised to put farmers first sell them out at harvest.
